Evidence and freedom of belief

What is brilliant about evidence is that it can (almost) always be denied or re-framed to suit one's own preferred beliefs.  That way, no-one is forced into believing something they're uncomfortable with.  Yes, some obvious, clearly observable things, like gravity, are undeniable, but more complex theories that depend upon "connecting the dots" can generally be ignored or denied away by those whom the theories don't suit. Some see this as a weakness of science and philosophy but I see it as a great strength. It results in a freedom of belief that is healthy if we wish to avoid living in a totalitarian society where everyone is expected or forced to believe the same things (generally that which suits the elites).
